Homer Watson painted the Death of Elaine in 1877, when he was inspired by the story of Elaine of Astolat. A tragic romance within an Arthurian legend who dies of her unrequited love for Lancelot.

Although popular in the British Isles and the United States, Watson's home was always in Doon where he loved to paint the forests.

In the Beech Woods highlights Watson's ability to capture the light and temperament of the woods. Watson's mastery of landscape painting was entirely self-taught.

The Homer Watson House & Gallery represents both the industrial and the artistic heritage of the village of Lower Doon. The original house, built in the 1830's became Homer Watson's residence, studio and gallery. Today, because of the foresight of the citizens of Kitchener, the home of this illustrious man is open to the public. This sketch was done in commemoration of the Man and the Gallery.
