Please join us as we celebrate the opening of the our Quilt & Fibre Exhibition.
Homer Watson House & Gallery is pleased to host the our Annual Quilt & Fibre Exhibition. This year we have three wonderful shows. Best Stitch Forward, Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and A Reflections.
Best Stitch Forward is a retrospective of award winning quilts and includes favourites from such artists as, Kathy Bisset, Jill Buckley, Millie Cumming, Tracey Lawko, Carolyn McMillian, Marg Notar, Anita Payne. As Jill Buckley so elegantly notes “We often overlook the beauty of a bloom as it fades…but nurture that which has “Gone to Seed” to be rewarded with new emerging and exciting possibilities”. These winning quilts will inspire, motivate and move you once more, as they grace the wall of this heritage site.
Earth, Air, Fire, Water is a solo exhibit by fabric artist Penny Grace. Although Grace works in many media, she finds working with silk to be the most appealing. For Grace, not only does silk appeal to our sense of touch, but also to our sense of sight. Using the inherent sheen of silk, Grace applies colour to present a glow in a way not possible in other art medium. Grace reflects, “Every time I put a brush to silk, I am awestruck by the richness and depth of the colours”. Using a painterly approach, she uses small patches of silk placed side-by-side, slowly building them up until the image is complete. Grace works almost exclusively with hand-dyed silk, creating one-of-a-kind original pieces.
A Reflection is HWHG’s second annual Miniature Quilt Juried Exhibition. This year fibre artists are asked to contemplate the word reflection. The 12 x 12 inch quilts are chosen for their ability to capture this theme figuratively or literally within the parameters of a quilt. Awards include Best in Show, Best Traditional, Best Original Design, Curators Choice and Viewers Choice. Come and vote for your favourite quilt!
Join us for the free opening reception on Sunday, May 6th from 2-4 pm for the opportunity to meet the artists as they offer their opening remarks.
Exhibition runs from April 29- June 3
Artist Talk: Saturday May 26 1 pm to 3 pm.
